Recently, Yoon made a guest appearance on the SBS show, Story of the Day When You Bite Your Tail. On that episode, the program delved into the violence of the notorious “Demolition Thugs” during the 1990s redevelopment projects in Seoul. The episode outlined the brutal tactics used by hired goons who beat up citizens, destroyed properties, and even assaulted women, children, and pregnant women, under the silent watch of the authorities. At that time, many journalists who had reported from active war zones had described the demolition sites as no different from battlefields.

The idol-turned-actress recalled her early days in the industry, revealing that she nearly lost her eyesight after being hit with acid once. That, however, was not an isolated incident of her being attacked in public.

Though it doesn’t compare to the pain the evictees went through, I too was once hit by a water gun filled with hydrochloric acid during my time as a singer and nearly lost my eyesight. I was also pelted with raw eggs, which left me with lasting trauma.

She insightfully added how trauma extends beyond the moments of violence and haunts victims for long periods. While using her own horrific experience as a baseline, Yoon underlined the depth of the pain carried by the survivors of Seoul’s mass eviction drive after suffering physical, verbal, and sexual assault. As per the reports, most of the perpetrators behind the atrocities went completely unpunished.
