Netizens Defend Kim Jaejoong Against Homophobia Accusations

Beloved second-generation K-Pop idol and former TVXQ member Kim Jaejoong was unexpectedly accused of homophobia after a recent episode of his talk show JaeFriends.

On Episode 35, Korean singer K.Will guested. The two go way back, being friends for over 20 years!

Still, Jaejoong hadn’t seen every MV of K.Will’s as he had gone through very stressful and hectic periods of his life. So, Jaejoong watched K.Will’s legendary music video for “Please Don’t…”, the title track off his 2011 album Third Album, Part 1, for the first time.

The music video stars actors Seo In Guk (Death’s Game and Doom at Your Service) and Ahn Jae Hyun (The Real Has Come! and Love with Flaws), who recently reunited. The “Please Don’t…” MV is known for its unexpected plot twist as it pushed the boundaries at the time in a conservative Korean culture. Throughout the music video, viewers assume that Seo In Guk is in love with the woman, SISTAR‘s Dasom, who is marrying Ahn Jae Hyun. By the end, it’s revealed that Seo In Guk is in love with Ahn Jae Hyun!

As Jaejoong watched the music video, reacting for the first time, he genuinely thought the woman was conflicted in love with the two men. K.Will wondered if they were watching the same MV.

When the plot twist hit Jaejoong, he was naturally shocked by the reveal of Seo In Guk’s character. He jumped up in surprise.

Jaejoong was so surprised he asked K.Will, “What’s going on? What’s wrong with the ending?” K.Will replied, “That’s the scene to watch. A twist matching ‘The Sixth Sense.'” The two then watched international reactions, to which Jaejoong realized, “Ohhh! They have the same reaction to me!”

Jaejoong’s reaction to the “Please Don’t…” MV has gone viral on X (formerly Twitter) with over 1M views at the time of writing, and it has been met with divided responses from netizens. Some have even accused him of homophobia due to his questions.

So, fans have defended Jaejoong.

Firstly, many empathized. They revealed they reacted similarly the first time. Like Jaejoong, they weren’t expecting that ending, having another plot in mind while watching.

Longtime fans of Jaejoong also remember that the idol himself encouraged shipping men. He is famous for his fanservice with U-Know Yunho.

 

Jaejoong has also been known to consume BL (Boy Love) content (not just his own fanfictions). He was spotted reading Yaoi (Japanese BL) in public, promoted the 2023 BL K-Drama The Eighth Sense via his Instagram, and sang OST for the 2020 BL K-Drama Mr. Heart.

Besides, in the same episode of JaeFriends, K.Will exposed Jaejoong for properly “kissing” him on his hand shortly after they met. This man is clearly not homophobic.

Additionally, in the episode, K.Will talks about how Jae Hyun wanted to make a sequel to the “Please Don’t…” MV. Jaejoong encouraged K.Will to do it.
