Hello, I am a student in the Division of Practical Dance. I am writing this post to share with fellow department students and the university administration (Academic Affairs Office, etc.) the issues that occurred this semester in the Production Practicum class. Please note that this class was taught by Professors A and B, and the issues described are the sole responsibility of these professors; other professors are not involved.

This post is not intended to attack any individual. Rather, it is written based on situations I personally experienced as a student, with the purpose of protecting students’ right to learn and requesting improvements toward a healthy educational environment.

The following content is organized around situations I directly experienced or witnessed while attending the class.

…and for making a sexually inappropriate comment in response to the students sharing their opinions or voicing their disagreements.

“[Repeated use of profanity during class] The most uncomfortable aspect of Professor A’s class was the extremely frequent use of profanity during lectures. During class, I repeatedly heard expressions such as “f*ck,” “dumba*s,” and “b*stard.” Such language not only made me feel humiliated as a student but also created an excessively harsh and intimidating learning environment.

[Inappropriate remarks in response to student complaints] There were moments when several students expressed opinions or raised objections about the teaching method. At that time, Professor A said, “If you dance like that, all you’re doing is jerking off while looking at yourselves in the mirror.” I heard this statement firsthand and felt that it was wholly inappropriate for an educator to make, especially when guiding students. There were minors in the class, and many students experienced intense shame and embarrassment because of this remark.

[Creating a hostile and intimidating atmosphere through shouting] Professor A’s classes at times involved raised voices, creating an unnecessarily threatening atmosphere. I often felt fear and pressure as a result, which made it difficult for me to fully concentrate on learning in such an environment.

[Referring to students’ performance as his own stage] During the first-year Production Practicum course, Professor A said, “This isn’t your stage, it’s my stage.” In a practicum class where student-led creation and learning should be central, hearing this directly was confusing and unsettling. It felt as though students’ creative processes and willingness to participate were not being respected.

[Referring to students as “extras”] During the production process, Professor A said in class, “I’m the director, and you’re just extras.” This expression made it feel as though students’ roles and efforts were being dismissed, and it significantly reduced motivation to participate in the class…”

The dancer-turned-professor also announced his resignation from the role, though he claimed that he never intended to make his students feel uncomfortable.

Hello, this is Poppin Hyun Joon.

I would like to offer my apology and provide an official statement as a professor regarding the recent online controversy surrounding the Division of Practical Dance at Baekseok Arts University.

First and foremost, I sincerely apologize to the students. As an educator, I created a harsh atmosphere through inappropriate words and actions, and I deeply reflect on the fact that, regardless of my intentions, my behavior caused students to feel sexually humiliated.

I would like to reiterate that there was never any improper intent.

As a result of this responsibility, I am resigning from my position as a professor in the Division of Practical Dance at Baekseok Arts University effective today.

Thank you for everything, and once again, I offer my deepest apologies to the students.
