PSY Booked On Suspicion of Proxy Prescription For Psychotropic Drugs—Agency Responds

He’s suspected of having received two types of medications since 2022.

DongA Ilbo reported on August 27, 2025 (KST) that the Seodaemun Police Station has booked singer PSY for violating the South Korean “Medical Service Act.”

According to the report, PSY is suspected of having received prescriptions for the psychotropic medications “Xanax” and “Stilnox” from a general hospital in Seoul from 2022 up until recently, without undergoing in-person medical examinations, and having his manager pick up the drugs on his behalf.

Xanax is a medication used to treat anxiety disorders and relieve symptoms, while Stilnox is a prescription drug effective for short-term treatment of insomnia in adults. Both are psychotropic drugs that require a doctor’s diagnosis and prescription.

In response to the reports, PSY’s agency, P NATION, issued an official statement as of August 28 (KST), admitting to some of the allegations and apologizing for the scandal.

The agency claimed, “PSY has been diagnosed with chronic sleep disorder and has been taking sleeping medication in accordance with his doctor’s prescription. His use of sleeping pills has always been under medical supervision, with prescriptions given for the appropriate dosage.” P NATION firmly denied the proxy prescription part of the reports.

Hello, this is P NATION, regarding the issue of singer PSY’s sleeping medication being collected by a third party. It was clearly a mistake and lapse in judgment to have a prescription sleeping pill collected on his behalf. We sincerely apologize.

PSY has been diagnosed with chronic sleep disorder and is taking sleeping medication as prescribed by his doctor. His use of sleeping medication has been under medical supervision, with prescriptions given for the proper dosage, and there has been no proxy prescription. However, in the process, there were cases where a third party collected the sleeping pills on his behalf, and police are currently conducting an investigation.

Once again, we apologize for causing concern.

The medical professional who prescribed the drugs is also undergoing investigation, though he is said to be denying the allegations and claiming that the treatment was conducted remotely.
