Shin Hae Chul’s family sues his doctor for 2.3 billion won

In October 2014, one of Korea’s rock icon Shin Hae Chul suddenly passed away after collapsing from a cardiac arrest and receiving surgery at a hospital in Songpa-gu only known as Hospital S.

Following the three-hour heart surgery and being conscious temporarily, Shin Hae Chul remained in a coma for six days before passing away on October 17, 2014 with peritonitis and pericarditis reported as the cause of death in the autopsy. In March, police confirmed that Shin Hae Chul’s death was due to medical malpractice and handed over the case to the prosecution.

The Seoul Central District Court held another court date on August 25th where it was reported that the family attempted to secure 20 billion won, or $16 million USD, in damage from the hospital which the court turned down as the amount is worth more than the hospital itself. On the same court date, the doctor Kang (44) was officially indicted with medical malpractice.

The family is currently suing the doctor for negligence for the price of 2.3 billion won, or $1.9 million USD, revealing in their defense that the artist had complained of fever and pain following the surgery, but nothing was done.
