One video shared via an online car forum called Bobaedream has since sparked outrage among Koreans. “Man A,” who posted the video, expressed frustration over the situation captured in the video.

In the video, Man A can be seen breaking up a violent physical fight between two bus passengers, “Man B” and “Man C.” As Man B punches and kicks Man C, who collapses after being struck, other passengers scream in horror.

Man A explained in his post that he witnessed the incident around this time last year on a bus. Man B was first verbally arguing with Man C. Man A stepped in to de-escalate the situation, but he ended up being drawn into the altercation when Man B responded aggressively, turning it into a physical fight.

Man A wrote in his post that he suffered a broken nose and was diagnosed with a three-week recovery period. The elderly Man C was hospitalized and later discharged after being diagnosed with injuries requiring more than six weeks of treatment.

Then, to the netizens’ surprise, Man A revealed that he and Man C are now both under investigation:

I witnessed a man in his 20s assault an elderly man in his 80s on a bus in 2024. When the younger man started hitting the elderly man, I stepped in, and it eventually turned into a physical fight. I suffered a broken nose (3 weeks of recovery), and the elderly man was hospitalized with serious injuries (over 6 weeks of treatment).

The problem is, the police ruled that both the elderly man and I struck the attacker and charged us with assault, too. I’ve now received a summary order to pay a ₩1,000,000 fine, and the elderly man has also become a defendant. If I had stood by and done nothing, who knows how badly the elderly man might have been hurt. There are witnesses, CCTV footage, and written petitions as evidence. This is deeply unfair.

Shouldn’t the National Assembly hold the actual attacker accountable first, instead of fining someone who tried to help?

— Man A

After reading that Man A and Man C have both received a summary order to each pay a fine of ₩1.00 million KRW (about $732 USD) after being questioned as defendants, netizens fiercely called out the South Korean police force for treating a good samaritan like a criminal…

  • “This guy deserves a commendation. There’s CCTV footage—how is this assault?”
  • “Are they crazy? That was clearly self-defense.”
  • “How is that assault from both parties? It was self-defense. So we’re just supposed to stand by and watch a senior citizen get beaten up???”
  • “Can we please revise our country’s self-defense laws… damn.”
  • “The law is seriously messed up.”
  • “He was helping an elderly man—they should be giving him an award.”
  • “How is this assault from the victims???? Seriously.”
  • “WTF.”
  • “Did you see how the dude went for the elderly man at the end? If no one stepped in, something even worse could’ve happened.”
  • “He deserves a citizen hero award, not an assault charge.”

…and penalizing the society’s most vulnerable member who fell victim to a heinous act of violence.

  • “Are the police out of their minds? The ‘mutual combat’ rule seriously needs to change.”
  • “If that’s what the law is, we might as well not have one at all—it’s absurd.”
  • “He helped someone in need, and instead of rewarding him, they’re punishing him???”
  • “Unbelievable.”
  • “How is that mutual combat?? Seriously—if the cops got hit, would they just sit there and take it?”
  • “Fix the law. This is exactly why people hesitate to help. If someone’s getting beat up next to you, of course you should help like he did—what, are we supposed to just stand and watch?”
  • “He was the victim. The grandpa got beaten badly.”
  • “This is insane. The attacker went after someone vulnerable. The law is absolute trash—no wonder everyone’s becoming selfish.”
  • “What are the police even doing?”
  • “Seriously, what the hell—the grandpa was clearly attacked first by that psycho.”
