Beloved Actress Admits Concerns She Had About Getting Married And Having Kids As The “Queen of Romance”
At the “30th Busan International Film Festival” (BIFF), actress Son Ye Jin hosted the “Actor’s House” event, where she opened up about how her marriage and childbirth changed her mindset.
While Son Ye Jin and her actor husband Hyun Bin are one of Korea’s most beloved celebrity couples, the actress confessed that she still worried about how the marriage would affect her career.
After getting married and having a child, I felt pressure about whether I could still meet audiences and viewers through great projects as I did before. Times are changing, and many actresses are active in diverse works, but when I thought about my own future as an actress, I felt an uneasiness that things might not be the same.

Most notably, Son Ye Jin said she “wondered if [she’d] still be able to do melodramas,” given that, more often than not, actresses who are married with children tend to struggle with landing roles in romantic K-dramas or K-movies. In the moments of doubt, though, the actress looked to her sunbaes and pushed forward.
I also wondered if I’d still be able to do melodramas, if people would still seek me out. But even in the midst of those uncertainties, I looked at the footsteps of so many seniors like Youn Yuh Jung, Kim Hee Ae, Jeon Do Yeon, Kim Hye Soo, and thought, ‘Of course, there will be a path for me too, and roles that I can show at this stage of my life.’ That’s when I came across No Other Choice and when I went on set, I felt so happy to be working.

On a positive note, Son Ye Jin said her own motherhood has definitely helped portraying mother roles!
My role was a mother, and now that I’ve experienced that myself, unlike before when I had to imagine it, I felt a confidence that it wouldn’t be awkward—because I’m a mom now.

Son Ye Jin made her debut in 1999 through a commercial and quickly rose to stardom. Her 2019 K-Drama, Crash Landing On You, has become one of her most iconic works for capturing the “co-stars to couple” pipeline between her and Hyun Bin.
