Young Tutor Tragically Passes Away After Managing 400 Students and Working Overtime

A young tutor in Wuhan, China, Li, died from cardiac arrest after being overwhelmed by managing 400 students and working long hours, including overtime during a company holiday.

Li, in his late 20s, had worked for five years at an online education company with a history of excessive work demands, including staff having to report bathroom and lunch breaks.

His fiancée, unable to reach him, alerted authorities, and he was found unresponsive in the office by a janitor the next morning, having suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.

The company claimed no overtime was scheduled during the holiday and praised Li’s dedication, but many netizens criticized the statement, arguing that performance pressure forces employees into “voluntary” overwork.

Former employees confirmed the company’s toxic work culture, with some quitting out of stress or in reaction to Li’s death. The incident has reignited public concern over China’s persistent overwork culture, despite legal limits on working hours.
