In her previous interviews, Yoo had shared that she dreamed of becoming a singer and started her trainee life at just 16, but eventually gave up on the dream due to her difficulty in remembering dance steps. Instead, she started preparing to become an actress. It was around this time, when she was in the second year of her high school, that her homeroom teacher developed a bias that led to her misery.

Yoo revealed that the teacher had taken a special liking to her and used to give her special privileges, such as growing her hair long. But winning the teacher’s favor also put a target on her back as her classmates grew jealous.

Consequently, she became a victim of severe bullying. Her classmates started tormenting her, messing with her chair to make it break when she sat down, or spilling food on her desk.

This painful history led Yoo to develop a special empathy for school bullying victims, which reflected in her treatment of such individuals when she started working as a radio DJ. She also persevered in her efforts to fulfill her dream and finally debuted as an actress when she was 28.

What followed was a career full of accolades, right from her rookie days. She was highly praised for her pretty face and witty character in the sitcom High Kick! Through the Roof. She won the Popularity Award in the TV category at the prestigious Baeksang Arts Awards for her performance in Secret Garden. Later projects, such as Queen and I, solidified her position as an actress, while the massive hit drama, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, catapulted her to international fame.
