For K-Pop fans tuning into the year-end award ceremonies, it’s been difficult to tell that NewJeans is a rookie group. From their commanding stage presence, confidence, and the hype of the crowd when they’re on stage, NewJeans has solidified themselves as a top 4th-gen group only five months into their debut.

NewJeans captivated fans from the moment they stepped on the 2022 SBS Gayo Daejeon red carpet. The members showed off their doll-like visuals in coordinating black and white dresses and immediately charmed the audience.

While Bunnies, NewJeans’ fans, may have hoped for the first award show performance of their new song “Ditto,” they certainly weren’t disappointed by the group’s second song pick.

A few artists at the 2022 SBS Gayo Daejeon covered iconic 2nd-gen K-Pop songs. LE SSERAFIM performed a remix of their song “FEARLESS” with Girls’ Generation‘s “The Boys.”

IVE performed a version of KARA‘s “Pretty Girl” with the melody from their own song “After LIKE” woven throughout.

NewJeans paid homage to K-Pop’s second generation through Wonder Girls‘ hit song “Tell Me.”

The group completely reimagined the song, replacing the instrumental with a version that suited NewJeans’ effortlessly cool style.

NewJeans earned attention for their trendy Y2K fashion, and member Haerin stole the audience’s heart with one iconic line.

The “omona” line from “Tell Me” was originally performed by Wonder Girls’ maknae Sohee in 2007 and was wildly popular, helping to catapult the song to new heights.

Haerin definitely did the iconic line justice and quickly went viral online.

A behind-the-scenes video of their performance captured the unreal cheers from the audience that followed Haerin’s “omona,” and fans who tuned in from home shared their amazement as well.

Haerin performed another iconic girl group line when she sang the famous “Shy Shy Shy” line from TWICE’s “Cheer Up” at the 2022 KBS Song Festival.
