BTS has had many memorable moments from award shows, with some being heartwarming and some being heartbreaking. Here are 4 BTS award show moments that every ARMY (BTS’s fandom) needs to know about.
1. Jin revealing that they almost disbanded
During the 2018 MAMA, ARMYs were shocked when Jin revealed that BTS considered disbanding because of the difficulties they were facing.
We had a hard time mentally during the beginning of this year. While talking with each other, we even thought about disbanding.
After Jin said this, some of the members could be seen getting emotional.
Thankfully for ARMYs, the members regathered their hearts and decided to continue as a group. Jin concluded by thanking the members and ARMYs.
I’m thankful to my members who decided to continue… I want to thank my members who always love me and to say thank you to ARMY for always loving us. Thank you.
2. The members speaking up about chart manipulation
In 2019, sajaegi, also known as chart manipulation, was a big issue in K-Pop. BTS decided to speak about this issue during some of their acceptance speeches. When Jin gave their acceptance speech for the “Song of the Year” award at the 2019 MAMA, he said that music should be done in a honest way.
I really want us to live in a world where all of those songs are heard and get the recognition they deserve. I know there are some negative ways to do this, but music should be done in an honest way. I look forward to living in a world where music is produced in good faith and heard in good faith.
RM also spoke about the sajaegi issue during the 34th Golden Disc Awards when he accepted their “Album Daesang” award.
We got lucky to have received so much love and support from everyone around us. With their help, we stand here under the spotlight saying whatever we want to say. But we know there are so many artists who don’t or can’t have this. And those artists pour their hearts into their music. They’re in this game fair and square, even in the depths we cannot grasp.
RM concluded by asking the audience to pay attention to artists who work hard and are full of passion.
In 2020, we truly hope their hard work and true passion do not go wasted, and that they can reach the audience here in the fairest way. The wrongs of the 2010s should end with the 2010s. In the new decade, we hope to be better.
3. RM’s humble acceptance speech
Despite their incredible success, the BTS members are incredibly humble, and RM gave a humble speech at the 2019 MMA. When BTS won “Artist of the Year” at the show, RM said he isn’t sure if they deserve it.
I honestly don’t know if we deserve this award, among all the artists who are here in front of us and who made great music this year.
RM then began talking briefly about BTS’s journey and how far they’ve come.
In 2013, we won the rookie award. We thought we were being pranked. By 2016, we won song of the year… we thought that was a prank too. Now that it’s 2019… We’re wrapping up the 2000s with such a huge honor. We’re in our 7th year together, guys!
RM shared that they always feel humbled after attending award shows and sometimes question their impact.
When we go home after awards shows like this, we feel… you know. We feel very humbled. Like, all we have ever done is make music in our studios, dance in the practice rooms, then perform on these stages. So we end up asking ourselves, do we really have the power to do anything? Are we doing anything?
RM concluded by giving a sweet message to ARMYs.
But through those long dark nights, you guys lit the way for us. So though we may be small, we will stay where we are, doing what we can, what we know how to do, doing what we do best… and we will try to light up the way for your long dark nights. We love you guys.
4. Suga’s response to people who accused them of lip-syncing
Suga can be quite the savage, and he decided to be a little savage at the 2017 SBS Gayo Daejun Awards. At the time, some haters were accusing BTS of lip-syncing, so Suga decided to stop rapping midway through a performance and smiled as the track went on without the sound of his voice.
