BTS‘s RM and Suga have always been heavily involved in songwriting and music production. The two idols both started pursuing music independently and, through their immense passion, evolved from artists who made music with inexpensive equipment to global superstars.
The two have always supported each other, working together to continually create new masterpieces.
RM and Suga have opened up in the past about their different songwriting styles. Suga is heavily inspired by books and places heavy emphasis on words.
I tend to think a lot about the meaning behind words. We deal a lot with emotions so I spend a lot of time thinking about how words can be construed differently.
RM is inspired by both film dialogue and visual art. The idol has admitted in the past that he never wants to discard a song because creating them is such a personal and intensive process for him.
[Writing songs] takes a long time for me. So it hurts, body and soul, when I have to throw one away.
But one thing both artists agree on in the songwriting process is that it can be difficult to work on songs inside a studio. Instead, it almost seems more likely that inspiration will strike after they have “quit” while they’re headed home.
Inspiration can also strike at unfortunate moments, like when they “get ideas during a shower or right before [they] sleep.”
For RM’s song “Wild Flower,” in his recently released album Indigo, he was inspired by the noises around him while walking.
As for Suga, the idol admits that he often works “in bathrooms.”
Some of the composers he’s worked with and been inspired by have often told Suga that “they get inspiration when they’re pooping.”
This is shockingly understandable because, as one of Suga’s mentors explained, “the process of writing is a form of excretion.”
When Suga first heard the comparison, “it would’ve sounded cool,” but his mentor continued to tell him how he literally “gets inspiration when he poops.”
Which RM wasn’t convinced was the best solution.
But regardless of where BTS get their inspiration from, they are continually praised for their musical genius.
