Y2K Royalty TLC Respond To NewJeans’s Dance Cover Of “Hat 2 Da Back”

The song they covered was released before any members of the group was born!

While their debut has been filled with both praise for their talent and criticism for potentially age-inappropriate lyrics as well as their ages in general, NewJeans have undoubtedly made an impact on the K-Pop industry with their fun and catchy releases.

NewJeans’s refreshing debut concept is a throwback to the days of early K-Pop and the OG American pop that created the aesthetic. Netizens even praised NewJeans’s Haerin for her ability to pull off the Y2K look popularized in Korea by groups like Fin.K.L and S.E.S despite her young age.

While NewJeans did not create the concept, many fans have begun associating them with a new wave of Y2K concepts that will most likely pop up with more and more groups over the next few months. NewJeans have also confirmed they will be continuing to move in the same musical direction, something their fans are very excited about.

Continuing their Y2K feel and aesthetic, NewJeans recently posted a dance cover of “Hat 2 Da Back” by American girl group TLC. While this is one of their older songs, TLC are known for being one of the first American girl groups to popularize the Y2K look and are remembered as such.

Now, it seems like NewJeans are TLC-approved! After a fan reposted the TikTok to Twitter, TLC’s Chilli quote tweeted the clip saying that she wanted to dance with them!

Fans are thrilled at the interaction and have high hopes for a potential future collab between the two groups. It seems like Chilli is at least open to the idea after favoriting a tweet from a fan asking about a collab. Other fans just insist it is part of the “NewJeans karma” that causes good things to happen for the group whenever hate is directed towards them.
