Beloved Idol Reveals His Own Mother Almost Ruined His Debut
Most aspiring idols worry about whether an agency will choose them. For B1A4’s Sandeul, though, the bigger obstacle may have been getting past his own mother.
In the latest episode of KBS’s AM Plaza, Sandeul appeared as a guest and revealed that he almost failed to debut because of his mother’s brutally honest reaction. “I almost couldn’t debut because of my mother,” Sandeul said.

According to the idol and musical actor, his agency contacted his mother before his debut because they wanted to cast him as an idol. However, his mother was not immediately convinced.
When they told her they wanted to cast me as an idol, my mother said, ‘Someone like my son isn’t cut out to become an idol,’ and hung up the phone.

Thankfully, that was not the end of the story. Sandeul explained that his mother later checked with his vocal teacher before making a final decision. “After that, I heard that my mother asked my vocal teacher,” he said, “and the teacher spoke well of me, so I was able to debut.”

Sandeul also opened up about his mother’s famously blunt personality, joking how she’s his harshest critic—but explaining, too, that her words came from wanting him to do better.
My mother has a very spicy side. I think it’s because she wants me to do better and become more successful, but when she talks to me, she speaks very strongly. Since I was young, I built up a tolerance to the point where hate comments or online comments don’t really affect me…
…she evaluates my singing and one time, when I sang, she told me, ‘It sounds like a machine is singing.’

And of course, despite her blunt criticism, Sandeul spoke about his mother as one of his most dependable supporters!
